Shops and mud
Moving out of London London was nearly bombed out y’know, so we thought oh we’d move out to, Dad said “let’s move out to a new estate”, so we came out here, but right half of London where we were, half of it was all flattened y’know. Shopping [So I suppose it was a nice relief to get to this beautiful new estate?] Yeah, well it wasn’t a beautiful estate then, it was all mud and muck, there was hardly anything on here, there was no shops [oh righ...
South Oxhey - Housing Estate Office
When the South Oxhey Estate was built the ‘ Estate Office’ was built at 37 Oxhey Drive. This was where people would visit when they were allocated a house and where they would collect the keys. For some years there were rent collectors who travelled around the estate collecting the rents but later on you could choose to pay it at the Estate Office. The Estate Office had a yard attached to it and the entry to this was in Seacroft Gardens ( where t...

In Pinner Road, where you have the picture of the Watford Co-operative Society, years ago in the 19, er, late 1940s and 50s above the co-op was the Co-op Village Hall that had, um, weddings and functions , and um, a friend of mine in the 1960s remembers going to like a church meeting, um above there, and its now been converted into a beautiful two bedroom flat and I recently had to rent somewhere temporarily with my neighbour and we lived there ...

Memories of Watford Heath
I have happy memories of growing up on Watford Heath. I first lived at no 26 then in 1951 my parents decided to move to number 27!! They lived there until 2005. Some of my earliest memories are of picking up silver strands from the Heath. We were told that these were dropped to stopped the radar working. How true this was I don’t know. We spent many nights in the Anderson shelter in the front garden, it always had a funny smell!! ...
Bombed out of London
Watching the building We used get the old train from Highbury, we used to live in Holloway Road, y’know Islington, and we used to get the train from Highbury out to South Oxhey and before it was all getting rebuilt, and we used to come out to see the houses being built, and wait for our house to be built. We used to live in Kirkaldy Green, that’s where we moved into, our first house was in Kirkaldy Green. Bombed out [Did you have a choice which...
Early shopping memories (oral history)
... Phil I remember Mr Barker's van, as a kid. He used to come to Farm Way in Bushey. It was a long removal van, as you walked in there was green grocery and tins down the end, and sweets. It smelt of vegetables. It seemed huge as a kid, massive, like an Aladin's cave. He was there before they built the shops in Bournehall Avenue. ...
Early days in Oxhey
... We moved to Oxhey when it was being built and I remember shopping at the van that visited.I have watched Oxhey grow over the years, the children went to school here. Green Lane wasn’t made up and was full of potholes when we first arrived. I loved living in a house as we had come from two rooms in Railway Terrace. ...
Oxhey Grange, Oxhey Lane, Watford.
These are the memories of Elsie Wilson (nee Baker). Elsie gave me the book for safe keeping as she knew I was interested in the history of the area around Watford Heath. She complied a record of her memories of Oxhey Grange where her Father, Nelson Baker, was Cowman and Keeper of the boilers. This includes photos. He and his family later ran the shop and tea room on Watford Heath. Elsie writes: James Doyle Penrose and his wife Elizabeth (Lady Pe...
Cow Lane and the trains
Well, when I first came over here Cow Lane you used to go underneath, the farmer used to go underneath [the railway], and half way through they used to have a foundry, one part for the cows and the other part for the walking, people walking through, and you used to cut through there to go at the back of the railway to go to Watford Fields. We used to cut through there, and then you could go down to Watford through Bushey and that used to be there...
FAR FROM THE EAST END
Hello everyone. Just wanted to share the good news that my book has just been published by Penguin Books. My story is not just that of an evacuee, but also of life after the war when we became some of the first people to move out of London to be resettled on the new South Oxhey Estate. It tells of the hardships suffered as we struggled to adjust to our new lives on a housing estate that still had no roads, schools or shops. It also tells of how u...

'Grange Cottage' and 'Thoughts of Watford Heath' - Oxhey
In my very young days I remember Watford Heath as a green area with houses all around it and approached from Watford by a sandy lane. There were no houses between the Heath and Heath Road; what is now Bucks Avenue was a cart track to Bucks Farm at the top. The Bucks, Sherwoods, Wilcot and Talbot area was just fields. Just below where No. 156 Pinner Road is now there was a stile ( now a flight of steps) to a footpath leading to Bushey, St James...

The Old Library
I was brought up on the South Oxhey Estate. We lived next door to the Library at 62 Little Oxhey Lane. My mother’s name was Iris Bew and she was the senior assistant at the library for twenty five years, along side Olive Roberts. Iris was known as the ‘Library Lady’. The library opened in June 1951 and had originally been a farmhouse and remained there until a new one was opened in Bridlington Road in May 1962. The old library was a two-up a...
Oxhey book launch 30th June 2012
... Very successful afternoon with a good turnout. Nicely timed intros by the top table followed by plenty of exhibits to browse and people to chat to as well as tea and cakes. The Chapel was also open and it was nice to be able to take a look at the beautiful interior again. Well done to all for a very pleasant afternoon. Poor but proud; a history of South Oxhey ...

The Park
My mid-terraced house overlooks South Oxhey Park. The back bedroom has a view of the new children’s playground. It looks South American with a hammock and tree house. The swings and tunnels have a modern, fresh design. All year people walk their dogs. There are cyclists, walkers, families enjoying it. Football teams play their games in the Season. Golfers play on the Golf Course in fine weather. In Autumn the leaves on the tree...
