Dr Scott

By John Bryan

A few days ago I came across a notice of the death of a Dr Alexander Scott, aged 90 who had been a GP in Hertfordshire for over 30 years. I wonder if this is the same Dr Scott who was one of the original GPs in South Oxhey along with Dr Davies and Dr Trimmer.

  • I too remember Dr. Scott and Dr. Trimmer (with the bow tie). I have recently finished transcribing my diaries for the late 60/70’s and there are many mentions of the excellent care, coming out on house calls on Saturdays, always managing to get an appointment (and not having to wait days). Certainly care was different then. We were very fortunate to have such a great service. I remember the waiting rooms where everyone sat side by side and moved up as your name was called, now of course we understand the breeding ground of virus’s. Great memories.

  • I remember Doctor Trimmer. He was so kind. He was based at the Health Centre in Oxhey Drive. Dr. Davies ran a surgery from his house at the end of Heysham Drive. Mr. Brown, a schoolmaster from Clarendon School lived almost opposite him.

  • Dr Davies was my favourite Doctor. But I remember my mother telling me Dr Davies saved her life! She had suffered 5 miscarriages before she had me at an age in those days that was thought to be an ancient at 39!
True to say they came out in all weathers in those days.

  • I grew up in the 50ties and sixties in South Oxhey and remember Dr Scott well, those were the days when you were ill your doctor would come out and treat you , not like today where you have to queue up for hours at a and e if your sick after hours, but aside from that Dr Scott was so caring.

  • I was interested to read your comment.  Yes, it was Dr Eric Trimmer who wore the ‘Bow Ties’.  A little bit or research found that he did write several books one of which was   ‘ Having A Baby’ ( 1974).  If you have a look on the internet you will be able to see the other publications.

Nice to hear of your memories.

  • I moved from South Oxhey to Kings Lynn Norfolk. I was 21 and had my first child when I was 23. We did not have the Internet then, I used the library in Kings Lynn for information on Babies. I was so surprised to see a book by one of the doctors from South Oxhey. It was the Doctor who always wore bow ties. I think it was Dr Trimmer but I could be wrong perhaps it was Davies. But definitely one of our Doctors was the Author of this book. I would love to know which.

  • I remember Dr. Trimmer. He was our Doctor when we moved to South Oxhey in 1954. But we must have changed to Dr. Davies at some time and he remained our Doctor until he retired. He was the best Doctor ever! When my son was a little boy he loved going to see Dr. Davies who always chatted to him and put him at ease.

  • The original surgery for the doctors was in a stable like building alongside ‘Oxhey Place’ or  the ‘Big House’ as it was known locally. Then they moved to a house in Prestwick Road, near the bottom of Kilmarnock Road. From there they moved to a permanent surgery in Oxhey Drive, just past the Police Station where it remains today.

  • Dr Scott knew our family and I can recall an appt. with him when I was about 36,( I was a Sales Manager in a high energy industry) and he told me if I carried on with my life style as it was I would not see 40. Well was he was right I had a heart attack in Sept ’85 followed by a quad by pass op in the Jan ’86 performed by Prof Yacoubs. Oh boy did I change. Dr Scott was the best followed by Dr.Hunter, Trimmer, Thompson and Davies. Dr. Hunter used to have the surgery in a house along Prestwick Road and I think Dr Thompson was there as well. Now that is history.

  • I came across an article recently with names I recognize “General practice on a new housing estate” Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health 1996;50:384-390 JHF Brotherston, SPW Chave with A Cledwyn-Davies, AS Hunter, DA Lindsay, A Scott, CB Thomson, EJ Trimmer “There are six doctors practising on the estate. Five of these form a partnership… The sixth doctor ….practises from a house which he occupies on the estate.”

  • I remember all these doctors, particularly Dr Scott. They do not come like these any longer.Real doctors who cared.

  • They were all pretty good Doctors back then. I loved Dr Davies cos of his accent, but Dr Hunter was great.

  • Dr Scott was the best GP in the practice! I am very grateful for his caring attitude and the times he came to the house, often at night and in bad weather, to see a little girl with severe breathing problems. One of his partners told my parents I wouldn’t survive my teens, and here I am!

  • I think that John Bryan is quite correct in believing this Dr. Alex Scott is the same person as the highly popular GP who joined the medical practice on the estate in the early days. The good doctor receives a deserved mention in David Reidy’s forthcoming social history of South Oxhey, in the chapter on Health Matters.
