I was lucky enough to be invited to attend the ASCEND Open Evening, AGM and Award Presentations on 16th November.  This special evening is held to celebrate the work of ASCEND, with special displays and a running buffet.  The award presentations are in recognition of the achievements of ASCEND clients and to formally present them with their certificates.

What have they been doing?

Unfortunately, I arrived just before the start of the AGM at 6.45pm and so was unable to sample the lovely buffet.  However, I did get to see some of the things that people have been doing at ASCEND including a fashion show, an extract from a book written by South Oxhey Scribblers who meet at ASCEND and a slideshow of their fantastic allotment project.

Certificates presentations

Everyone in the room was keen to applaud as one by one, people collected their certificates for such things as literacy, digital photography and computer skills.  They were presented by the Bishop of Hertford, Gareth Malone and a local police officer.  Particularly moving were the awards for the Achiever of the Year and the Young Achiever of the Year.  There were also many thank yous to the staff at ASCEND and other people who support the work they do, including their many volunteers.

ASCEND do a great job in the community.  It was a lovely evening, and so heartening to see how much people can achieve.  Have you done a course at ASCEND or attended the Award Presentations?
