Friendly shopping in the 1960s

Barkers mobile grocery van

By S Jones

I remember the Barkers mobile grocery van.  I found it fascinating and a real novelty, with friendly service and the owner in a white coat.  It became a familiar sight.  And I used to love to go inside and just look and see all the different things for sale.  It was used very widely locally.

  • I remember it so well as I used to work on the Barkers van as a young lad. I recall having to take the pre-ordered grocery’s to the doors and also serve in the van.

  • He used to stop outside our house in Muirfield Road handy for sweets if mum had any spare money very rare in  those days, still fun see a coach carrying food.
