Our Shop in South Oxhey
R & J Parsons
Josephine Parsons - nee Searle
My Husband and I bought the Hardware shop on Bridlington Road in 1973 – We lived in the flat above the shop with our three children ( I had known Oxhey for a long time having grown up there since I was 7yrs until I married in 1959) We had a paraffin dispenser in the shop and sold many gallons – we stocked a large range of wicks for the paraffin heaters – loose nails and screws – bags of wood and coal – locks – light bulbs – pots and pans – a range of Addis plastic ware – ornaments – and many other items – you name it we had it. My husband is a keen modeller mostly aircraft and he introduced the balsa wood and other bits to make these models – As a keen gardener I introduced a range of bedding plants which sold well – my husband did repairs in the shop to the paraffin heaters, fitted wicks, repaired many items and did odd jobs for people in the neighbourhood. The photographs I sent in show my eldest daughter and myself in the shop and my youngest daughter with me in the flat – my son worked at Watford Electric.
