Moving To The Area

Came from London in 1948

By David Reidy

We came from London in 1948. I still remember th estate then – no shops, few made up roads, no buses, no schools. We were bussed to Watford (Beechen Grove School). The houses were very cold in winter with few comforts – no proper carpets or central heating. I remember the 1953 coronation celebrations and joining the brand new Woodhall School in 1954. There was a strong community spirit – poor but proud.

  • As you attended Beecham Grove School, do you recognise anyone in the 1953 photo that I have posted on Our Oxhey?
