Best Online Archive 2011
By Beverley Small
Our Oxhey was presented with the award for the Best Online Community Archive 2011 at the Community Archives and Heritage Group (CAHG) Conference on 27th June 2012
The website aims to provide a sustainable forum for people to share and enjoy memories and photographs of Oxhey. Without a museum in Oxhey and little written history, the website has provided a forum to share and celebrate and to preserve local history for future generations. The judges considered the website ‘shouted enthusiasm’ and urged all with an interest in presenting local history to ‘take a look’.
Statistics as of May 2012
- The website has been visited by people from 84 countries
- The number of visits to the website has now reached 11,622. These visitors have viewed 91,544 pages
- They have added 274 comments to the pages within the site
This online activity has been supported by tea parties, local history days, stalls at Summer Fairs, involvement with local junior schools and adult learners, articles in community newsletters and memory gathering exercises at the local over 50s social club, the Clitheroe Club. Most recently members of the Our Oxhey Group spoke to 169 people at the Oxhey Village Environmental Group Summer Fayre which took place on 16th June.
Thanks to all who have helped
The website was created as part of the Herts Memories project to record and celebrate the history and memories of the people of Hertfordshire. Our Oxhey is run by a group of volunteers and staff from Hertfordshire Libraries and Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies. The software is provided and supported by Community Sites. The project was originally funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Many local residents, present and past, have helped and supported us, added their memories and photos and their comments. Thank you everyone!
Special thanks to David, Rosie, Sue W, Sue G and Llinos
