I was a member of the Youth Group at Paddock Road Free Church, Oxhey, in the 1950’s. The church was later renamed Oxhey Village Baptist Church. Sunday School took place on Sunday afternoons, and once a month a Young People’s evening service before which there was a tea in the hall at the back.
A Youth Discussion Group was held on Friday evenings, and on another weekday evening there was a Youth Club. Discussion Group Hikes took place on Bank Holidays to places such as Chipperfield and Sarratt; members often arrived home exhausted and, true to the reputation of British Bank Holidays, rather wet! In summer an annual coach outing to the seaside took place which was very popular in the village. In winter there was a Church Social, and in spring the Sunday School Entertainment and Prizegiving in which most pupils took part.
All simple pleasures, but much enjoyed by all who took part. It was sad to see the Church closed in 2003 and later demolished. Read my story in the attached pdf files.
