Health Matters Day at Oxhey Library
By Beverley Small
Representatives from a variety of organisations joined us at Oxhey Library on 29th November 2011 to provide information, advice and guidance about health related matters. Many people came to take advantage of the opportunity and spoke to representatives from the following:
- Alzheimers Society
- Migraine Trust
- Countryside Management Walks
- Watford Heart Support Group
- Herts Society for the Blind
- HertsHelp
- Books on Prescription
- South Oxhey Childrens Centre
- Volunteer Centre, Three Rivers
- NHS Smoking Cessation Service
- Community NHS Trust
Chair Based exercise
Groups from ASCEND and Northwick Day Centre took part in the chair based exercises led by Carol from CQZone. They had great fun learning how to improve their flexibility and strength.
Online Health Checks
Some of the Northwick Day Centre group then went on to learn more about health information on the internet by joining library staff for one-to-one online health checks.
Mystery Juice
Many people enjoyed trying the juices at the Juice Bar sponsored by the Co-op in South Oxhey, and they also entered the mystery juice competition.
Health Walk
The Countryside Management Service were promoting their walks in the area, and 9 people took part in a walk taking place as part of the Health Matters event.
Baby Bounce and Tasty Tales
Smaller people were also able to take part in finding out how to be more healthy. There was a Baby Bounce and Rhyme session to teach parents and carers some rhymes with actions to do with their children. Food themed stories and craft were offered to pre-schoolers in Tasty Tales story time.
Study and sport
Youth Connexions Study Support Group also took part in the day. They tried the juices from the Juice Bar and had a go at different games on Wii Sport on the electronic whiteboard.
