Local author to talk at Oxhey Library 2013

"Far from the East End" - moving to South Oxhey after the war

By Beverley Small

Iris Jones Simantel

Join us on Monday 25th March from 6pm at Oxhey Library, when local author Iris Jones Simantel will be talking about her new book FAR FROM THE EAST END

The story is not just that of an evacuee, but also of life after the war when they became some of the first people to move out of London to be resettled on the new South Oxhey Estate. It tells of the hardships suffered as they struggled to adjust to their new lives on a housing estate that still had no roads, schools or shops. It also tells of how unwelcoming the neighbouring townsfolk made them feel.  Her story is filled with humour, which balances the sadness and despair experienced.

There will be free refreshments from 6pm, when we will also be collecting people’s memories of Oxhey.  Iris will be talking at 7pm.  Tickets cost £2 and are available from Oxhey Library or call 01707 281533.

This event is part of Hertfordshire Libraries Litfest ’13 so why not see which other authors are speaking at a library near you?
