Oxhey Village Environment Group ( OVEG) - History Sheet No. 18.

Ellen Crawley.

September 1999

My name is Ellen Dilks of No 5 Watford Heath and what follows is part of my family history and some of my early recollections.

My Grandmother, then Ellen Crawley, was born in December 26, 1852 and was the first child christened in Oxhey Chapel after its restoration. Until her death in 1900, her mother was keeper of the chapel.

  • My Father Bill Hall was born in 1891. We lived at Carpenders Avenue from 1940 to 1960. My father worked at Rolls-Royce Ltd in Hythe Road, Willesden. and during the War, worked on Merlin Engines. I was 8 years old at that time. I can remember that at weekends after an hectic time during the Blitz. He would try and relax. He would visit ‘The Load of Hay’ at Watford Heath, where he would play Darts or Dominoes (Cribbage), with his friend who was called Herbie Dilks, who lived at Watford Heath. The reason that I mention this is that after reading ‘Recollections’ it occurred to me that my Father’s friend Herbie Dilks, who he spoke about frequently may be a relative of Ellen Dilks ?
