During the Fireman’s strikes in the 1970’s Clarendon School was used as a temporary fire station for the Army with their ‘Green Goddess’ fire engines.  Much to the delight of the local children.

  • I escorted the Green Goddess fire engines from Watford police station to the school in Chilwell Gardens. I had just been posted to Watford and hadn’t even heard of Oxhey. Had to stop every few minutes to check my map and finally got them there
