My time at Clarendon

Friends & teachers - where are they now?

By Wendy Pickard

Hi, I am Wendy Pickard and I was at Clarendon between 1959 and 1964.

Does anyone remember me?

My friends included Christine Mills, Judith Stimpson, Linda Stead and Georgina Waterston. I also remember being friends with Susan Gent who contacted me a few years ago at a time when I couldn’t remember much about my schooldays except that I always seemed to be in trouble which

which was funny really because I ended up having a career in teaching.

The teachers I remember fondly are Mr Methven who got me really interested in history and who was very inspiring. Mrs Stephens who was an exceptional teacher and who taught me English and became a great friend.

Mr Ricketts who taught English and on whom I had a huge crush. Mr Elliot

who was lovely, Mr Teasdale, Mrs Sphynx, and Miss Taylor who tried to teach me needlework.

Sadly I’ve lost touch with everyone except Christine Mills who I see

quite often. Does anyone know what happened to any of these people?

  • Hello Everyone
I have come onto your site because I am looking for my friend Christine Dodds who lived in Chilwell Gardens. I believe the years she attended were 1959-63 or 4 and she went onto West Herts College studying science.
We played netball in same Commercial union team and she attended my 21st birthday .
If anyone has had contact with her or knows where she is please get word that Pam Oakley is looking for her. Pamela.oakley@googlemail.com
    Thank you everyone.

  • Thanks for adding my initial comment to your website. It’s been over 40 years since I last visited South Oxhey. I was 26 at the time and serving in the RAF. I did find Terry Devine and found out that a good friend of mine when I lived at the top end of Hayling Road had sadly passed away. I do remember many of the children I went to Clarendon School with and those of my own age who lived near me. Mick Beech, Roy Lord, Graham Hutchinson, Dave Srong, Ann Mason, June Doyle, and Susan Bell are some of those. I also remember Peter Snow. I think his Mum was a school secretary. Anyway, like I added previously I would be pleased to hear from anyone who remembers me or any of the persons I have mentioned above.

  • Hi, I went to Clarendon School leaving at 15 in 1965. My first class was 1c with Miss Crook. I remember Miss Hurst, Mr Teasdale and the headmaster Mr Stewart. I often think about old class mates and friends. Terry Devine, Dave Strong, Clive Russell, are examples. I lived in Hayling Road and moved to Corbett House, a block of flats, which I think has now been demolished. On leaving school I joined the GPO in Watford, as a Telegram Boy. Moved to Cornwall in 1967 and ended up working on lighthouses, joining the RAF in 1970 and leaving in 1994. From 1994 to 2010, I worked in the civil nuclear industry. Now retired with 2 sons and 4 grandchildren. I was often called Acky at school. Cannot say I really enjoyed going to school, but saying that I do have some fond memories. Good to hear from anyone who remembers me.

  • Wendy, didn’t you go onto Rickmansworth Grammar School? I vaguely recall that you might have arrived as I was leaving.
