A newspaper report records
‘Mrs Crawley, of Oxhey Wood died at the ripe age of 83. As the Chapel keeper of Oxhey Chapel she suited the place as the place suited her. Like a true conservative she loved the former state of things and never accepted the recent restoration which has made Oxhey Chapel, as to its interior more worthy of its noble traditions. We almost liked her the better for this.
It was so unnatural that in her old age she should cling to the immediate past. Many will feel her loss. However well the chapel may be served Mrs Crawley’s place can hardly be filled for those who have long worshipped in the Chapel, which was kept in such excellent order by this good soul. Her work was humble but it was work which God had given her to do, and she did it well. What more can be said of anyone’s work’
