Ration Books in 1953.
... Days of rationing and nowhere here to buy them so a list plus ration books were left on the step for the (daily) delivery. In due course sparse rations were delivered plus life-line ration book. Bills were paid with a trek to Brazier Farm to pay. Then came the new shops in South Oxhey and we deserted Braziers (cheaper). An old man went round delivering a crazy document about alien landing and the world was ending (it didn’t). ...
Moving To The Area
... We came from London in 1948. I still remember th estate then – no shops, few made up roads, no buses, no schools. We were bussed to Watford (Beechen Grove School). The houses were very cold in winter with few comforts – no proper carpets or central heating. I remember the 1953 coronation celebrations and joining the brand new Woodhall School in 1954. There was a strong community spirit – poor but proud. ...
All Saints Church
... We watched as the old All Saint’s Church was knocked down. A cold shiver went through my head when the Bulldozer smashed through the Cross. I suppose there is no nice way to pull down a building ...
Village feel.
... I have moved to Carpenders Park after living in Harrow for more than 60 years. The area feels like a village and people have been kind and because of this I do not regret the move. ...
Memories of South Oxhey
... I have been visiting South Oxhey for 18 months since meeting my partner and have been involved in communty activities such as the choir (all 3 events). Have walked the woods and continue to visit at weekends! I also seem to visit the new library often. ...
Light Air Craft Crash
... I remember a light aircraft crashing into a bunker beside the old 17th fairway. It flew over my house making a loud noise heading in the direction of the Carpenders Park Station. Must have been in trouble and trying to land on the golf course. ...
Oxhey Place Doctors & Clinic
... Memories of my mum taking myself aged 4 and my brother aged 15 months from my home in Ashburnham Drive down to Oxhey Place to see the doctor and also to the clinic to pick up tins of infant powder milk and codliver oil. This was very difficult due to most paths and roads up the Ashburnham end were still hardcore and ashes and difficult to push the pram over. ...
First station.
... First visit to Carpenders Park in 1938. Station a halt for golf course on which South Oxhey was built after 2nd War. ...
Moving In Day
My earliest memory of South Oxhey was our ” Moving In Day” in July 1948. I was 4 years old, with a 6 month old sister and brothers of 14 and 18 years old. ‘Cattle Arch’ We had travelled from our old home in Morden, Surrey in the removal van. Instead of driving down Little Oxhey Lane, the driver had chosen to go down Carpenders Avenue and come onto the estate through what was then called the ‘ Cattle Arch’. This was accessible in those days for ca...
Fast Track Your Future
In January, West Herts College, in partnership with Youth Connexions, started a programme of activities for a group of young people not in employment, education or training. This 10 week course called “Fast track your future” included team building and communication skills, IT skills, digital photography and an opportunity to gain the Construction Skills Certificate. At the end of the course the students each delivered a PowerPoint presentation...
First Memories
February 28th 1953 Oxavians Our first day on the estate, moving into the Police House at 314 Hayling Road. A cold but dry day and happy memories of that initial encounter with the Oxavians: inquisitive neighbours, marvellous woods and playing fields, and a wander up Hayling Road to the new shops in Hallowes Crescent. Well done John The next day: into Little Furze JMI School and meeting up with the charismatic Leo Magin, class teacher of B1. Brill...
39 Oxhey Drive
In the summer of 2008, the library in Bridlington Road closed to the public for a refurbishment funded by the Big Lottery Fund. The library service and staff all moved to a smaller building at 39, Oxhey Drive, just around the corner from the old building. As the building was so much smaller, the stock and services offered were also reduced, but staff cheerfully carried on serving their customers for a whole year at this site. In August 2009, the...
Came The Day - South Oxhey Carnival 1957
The South Oxhey Carnival of 1957 took place in August. The Procession The procession started at the top of Hayling Road and proceeded along many others including Gosforth Lane, Muirfield Road and Prestwick Road, and leading back to the fairground. The Carnival Queen was crowned at a ceremony in the fairground on the edge of the golf course off Hayling Road. ORIGINAL CINE FILM CREATED BY ROBERT J HOOPER DONATED TO THREE RIVERS MUSEUM BY HIS FAMILY...

South Oxhey Playing Fields
This valuable stretch of open space has been under threat on several occasions since the war years when German bombs fell on Oxhey Golf Course and in the adjoining woods. Some of the craters became small ponds, much to the enjoyment of small children from the nearby estate! When the former golf course was closed on March 31st 1952, it was officially designated the South Oxhey Playing Fields, and it has been a much-appreciated feature of the local...

Fish and chips
... We used to have fish and chips on a Thursday night. That was the night my Mum used to do the shopping and so instead of cooking, we had a take away. She used to go to the fish and chip shop in Villiers Road, because her and my Dad thought they were the best in the area. The fish and chips were wrapped in newspaper then. I can’t remember what the shop was called, can anyone else? ...
The gas man
I was working in South Oxhey from 1980 to 1986 for British Gas. The biggest problem I had working there was that the jobs used to take twice as long as anywhere else because by the time you had had 2 cups of tea and a slice of cake and listened to old stories about the war, an extra hour had gone out of your day. Down to earth Londoners It was like working in your grandparents house. They were real down to earth Londoners. They were never phas...
Oxhey Wood School Uniform 1951
... The children of Oxhey Wood School in 1951 wore a navy blue uniform. There was a navy blazer with a badge and caps for the boys and berets for the girls with the smaller badge on. The tie was worn by both boys and girls, although not all the children wore the uniform. ...
