Blown away
Our Oxhey had a pitch at the OVEG Summer Fayre on Saturday 16th June. Pitching up We pitched up with our displays and leaflets and our gazebo, little knowing (but suspecting) that by the end of the day we would be hanging on to it all for dear life. Overwhelmed by visitors After solving the small problem of no guy lines for our gazebo, we set up our stall, but little prepared us for the onslaught of people, keen to look at our old photos and fin...

John Schad
John Schad read extracts from his book “The late Walter Benjamin” at his Literary Estate event at the Palace Theatre on 2nd June 2012. “The novel centres on one particular tenant who claims to be Walter Benjamin, and only ever uses words written by Benjamin, apparently oblivious that the real Benjamin committed suicide 20 years earlier whilst fleeing the Nazis. Initially set in the sixties, the text slips back to the early years of the estate” Jo...

Growing up in South Oxhey
We moved to South Oxhey in 1948, a complete mud bath. I remember walking to Lower High Street, Watford to buy Coke from the Gas company, this was transported in the baby’s pram probably 2 or 3 times a week when money was available. Our front garden had some of the best lawns in the area we went turfing on the Golf course The wonderful greens were our front lawn I first went to school at Watford Fields School, half a day (My daughter is now deput...
Mohammed
I’m going alone to Mecca, I’ve decided I’m leaving her at home. How can I tell her? ‘Shema, we need to talk.’ Shema looked at me but it was the briefest of looks. It was a look that you can only see on the face of her kind of woman. What kind of woman? The kind that Shema is; a devout woman, proud of her children, proud of her home, proud of her family; or at least that’s what she would have you believe. She is not proud of me, and that...

Monday February 26th A wet morning but cleared up a nice fine afternoon, very mild. George Forfeitt came and took Mother for a nice drive which she enjoyed very much. From Braziers to Pensworth
When Braziers Dairy, which has a depot in Oxhey Lane, was sold to Pensworth, the new owners had intended to keep the old name but decided to change it after discovering there was another depot with the same name. Gideon Bishop, director and owner of Pensworth, said: “We were planning to keep the local name and brand, which is what we do in similar situations. But it was apparent we had to backtrack that mindset and the company was ready and neede...
Carpenders Park cemetery walk
Well, I finally got back across to Carpenders Park for a walk through the cemetery grounds. I parked in the car park next to the Partridge pub and entered via the alleyway opposite. Only a few yards in is the first bridge across the Hartsbourne stream – looking a bit worse for wear with coping stones missing. The stream was still fairly shallow and free flowing. Floods in the area are a thing of the past since the flood alleviation dam was bui...
