Oxhey in the 1950s

It was fabulous

By Doreen Clements nee Wright

I moved to the top of Preswick Road in the early 1950s, with my family. I remember having to hide my wellington boots in a hedge adjacent to the railway station. If you didn’t use boots when you got off the train you used to sink in the mud.

The station at the time was a golfing halt. If you wanted to play golf you would ring the bell for the golf course for the train to stop.

My husband moved here before I did on December 1949 to Ikley Road just as the estate was being built. He did a newspaper round from Little Oxhey Lane, from a shop which at that time was just a shed.

We had our wedding reception at Oxhey golf course, which had an enormous red brick fire place alongside one wall. It was fabulous.

  • My nan and grandad(Wakefield) lived at 4 Kilmarock Road and I lived with them up to leaving at age 5. I remember the Butts and also the Andrews. Moved across the train tracks before returning to live in Woodhall Lane.
