My thoughts on South Oxhey
Change for better or worse
By Annette Derbyshire
In the 40 years that I have lived in South Oxhey there has been many changes ,some for the good some not so good. My parents moved to South Oxhey many years ago . In those days we had two Secondary Schools both had swimming pools ,and if you past your 11 plus you went into Watford to Grammar School, life was simple and we mostly played out in the street ,my mother was told by a councillor at the time ,that the reason for all the greens was a condition for allowing the building of the estate . So all the London children had somewhere to play and develop a sense of community. We loved playing ball games and run outs up the woods . Now I see signs saying ‘no ball games’ on greens, and it would not be safe to let our children go to the woods by themselves .On the plus side Play Rangers has been a godsend to children wanting to get away from their screens, and take part in all the activities we got up to years ago.The Centre has given so many things for children and adults to do ,Ascend is another good resource that we cannot do without now.I look forward to the new shopping precinct in anticipation that we have a good selection of shops and no areas that ,youths can hang around up to no good ,lets all look forward to the future .
